KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN AGRICULTURE IS THE ONLY WAY TOWARD THE PRODUCTION OF THE SAFE FOOD AND REDUCED PESTICIDE USE
Integrated farming is today a standard requirement in EU and shall be adopted by Croatian farmers as well. Integrated farming ensures environmental protection and food production with less pesticide residues. In addition to large socio-economical benefit, farmers producing according to the principles of integrated farming will be able to obtain funding support from agro-environmental programm. This may result with higher income comparing to conventional production.
Integrated farming requires highly motivated and educated farmer capable to make decisions based on scientific knowledge in the specific field conditions. This is possible only if there is successful methodology for transfer of scientific knowledge from scientist toward agricultural enterprises and farmers.
Scientists from Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb jointly with their colleagues from Agricultural faculty in Osijek are investigating all aspects of integrated production of sugar beet with the aim to implement basic principles of integrated production of sugar beet in the agricultural production in the area of County of Vukovar-Srijem.
- based on the results of research activities establish the most appropriate agro-technical measures and develop a strategy for IPM in sugar beet in order to obtain high yields, prevent pest outbreaks, reduce pesticide use and minimize the damages.
- to develop locally specific guidelines for IPM in sugar beet.
- to establish a participatory training for IPM in sugar beet based on principles of Farmers Field Schools (FFS) in order to enable sugar processing industry and farmers for the development and implementation on locally suitable IPM strategies for sugar beet in County of Vukovar- Srijem.
